Hair Salon Appointments: Booking the Right Service and Getting the Look You Want

How to book the right salon service and slot, what to bring and say at a consultation, and how deposits and cancellation policies work.

Independent guide — not a government website. Book My Service can’t book or change appointments, and we aren’t affiliated with organizations named here. Rules and fees change — confirm with the official source before you go.

Key points

  • Book the specific service and length you need — color and long-hair services take much longer than a basic cut.
  • Bring photos of what you like (and what you don’t) and be honest about past color or treatments.
  • Read the salon’s deposit, lateness and cancellation policy before you book.

Choose the right service

Salon booking pages usually list services with a time and price range. Pick carefully:

  • Cut only vs. cut and style vs. color — color, highlights and corrective work need much longer slots.
  • Consultation — for big changes, many stylists suggest a short consultation first.
  • New client — some salons have a separate option or a longer slot for first visits.

If you aren’t sure, call or message the salon and describe what you want. Walk-in chains may let you join a waitlist online instead of booking a time.

Policies to check before booking

  • Deposits or a card on file — common for longer services.
  • Cancellation window — how much notice is needed to avoid a fee.
  • Lateness — many salons shorten or rebook appointments if you arrive late, because the next client is booked.
  • Price — final prices can depend on hair length and thickness; ask for an estimate.

Prepare for the appointment

  1. Collect photos of styles you like, and ideally ones you don’t.
  2. Know your hair history: previous color, chemical treatments, keratin or relaxers, box dye — it affects what is possible.
  3. Arrive with hair in the state the stylist asks for (some prefer it clean and dry, others don’t mind).
  4. For color services, tell the stylist about any allergies or past reactions. Some salons do a patch test in advance; ask about their practice.

At the chair

Describe what you want in plain words — “take off about an inch”, “low maintenance”, “I don’t use heat tools”. Ask the stylist to repeat back what they will do. Speak up during the service if something looks wrong; it is easier to adjust early.

Nails, lashes, brows and waxing

The same habits apply: book the exact service, arrive on time, and mention allergies, skin sensitivity and any medicines that affect your skin. Choose clean, licensed businesses — your state’s cosmetology board can usually confirm a license.

After the appointment

Ask how to care for the result and when to rebook. If you aren’t happy, contact the salon soon — many will make small adjustments if you raise it promptly. Be cautious of unexpected texts asking you to “confirm” a booking by paying through a link; contact the salon directly instead.
