Bridal Gown Appointments: How to Prepare and What to Ask

How bridal salon appointments work, who and what to bring, and what to ask about timelines, deposits and alterations before you buy.

Key points

  • Ask the salon how far ahead to shop, since ordering and alterations can take months.
  • Bring a small group, inspiration photos and the right undergarments and shoes.
  • Get the order details, delivery date, deposit and refund terms, and alteration costs in writing.

How bridal appointments work

Many bridal salons work by appointment, giving you a consultant and fitting room for a set time. Some charge an appointment fee or ask for a card to hold the slot; some credit it toward a purchase. Ask when you book.

When to start

Ordering a gown can take months, and alterations take more time on top. Ask salons about their typical ordering and alteration timelines for the styles you like, and work back from your wedding date. Many salons offer rush options or off-the-rack gowns for shorter timelines, sometimes at extra cost.

Who and what to bring

  • A small group. A few people whose opinions you trust usually works better than a crowd; some salons limit guests.
  • Photos of gowns you like and don’t like.
  • Undergarments similar to what you plan to wear, and shoes at about the right heel height.
  • Your budget — tell the consultant at the start, including whether it covers alterations, veil and accessories.

Questions to ask before you buy

  1. Is this gown made to order or off the rack? What is the estimated delivery date?
  2. What size will be ordered, and how was it chosen?
  3. What is the deposit, when is the balance due, and is anything refundable if plans change?
  4. Are alterations done in-house? Roughly what do they cost, and how many fittings are typical?
  5. What happens if the gown arrives late or damaged?

Ask for all of this in writing on your order form, and keep copies of receipts and messages.

Fittings

Book alteration fittings early. Bring your wedding shoes and undergarments to every fitting, and allow time between the final fitting and the wedding for any last adjustments.

Watch out for fake messages

Be cautious about unexpected texts or emails claiming there’s a problem with your order or asking you to pay through a link. Contact the salon using details from its official website or your receipt.
